PANERIS Winter School – Lisbon

Ageing & Neurodegenerative Diseases

Organiser: GIMM
Date: 23rd-27th February 2026
Place: Fundação GIMM – Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (Lisbon Site), Avenida Professor Egas Moniz 1649-028 Lisboa – Portugal

The Winter School on Ageing & Neurodegenerative Diseases, organised by GIMM in Lisbon, will take place from 23 to 27 February 2026.

This five-day programme is aimed at students and early-career researchers interested in the cellular and molecular mechanisms of brain ageing and neurodegeneration, as well as in the translational and career-development aspects of biomedical research.

The programme combines lectures, hands-on sessions and career-development workshops, offering both conceptual foundations and practical skills. Scientific sessions will cover topics such as neural stem cells and neuroregeneration, astrocyte–neuron interactions, neurotrophic signalling and neuroinflammation, with a focus on their relevance for age-related and neurodegenerative disorders.

We are pleased to welcome two invited speakers:

  • Prof. Aurelijus Burokas (Vilnius University Life Sciences Center) with a lecture on The microbiota-gut-brain axis in aging mice.
  • Dr. Piotr Chmielarz (Maj Institute of Pharmacology, Polish Academy of Sciences) with a talk on Targeting α-synuclein aggregation in Parkinson’s Disease: from neurotrophic factor signalling to nanotechnology-based strategies.

Additionally, the School will feature Career & Skills sessions, including How to Write Winning Fellowship Applications and Beyond Academia: Exploring Careers in Research Management & Administration, organised by the European and International Projects OfficeTeam from IDIBAPS.

Beyond the scientific programme, participants will have the opportunity to join small-group practical sessions, a poster session and networking activities.

Join us in Lisbon for a week of science, skills and networking dedicated to ageing and neurodegenerative brain disorders.
