Bridging the Translational Gap: Highlights from the PANERIS Symposium 2025
On 13 November 2025, the PANERIS project held the PANERIS Symposium 2025, under the theme:
“Bridging the Gap: Exploring Techniques for Neurodegenerative Disorders from Preclinical Research to Clinical Application.”
Organised by GiMM, this fully online symposium brought together members of the PANERIS consortium and the broader scientific community to discuss emerging tools, technologies, and approaches that aim to translate discoveries from the lab bench to the clinic in the field of neurodegenerative disorders.
Each session included keynote talks from senior researchers and short presentations from early career scientists, selected through an open call for abstracts.

Some program highlights:
- Electrophysiology session: Featured talks by Miguel Remondes (GIMM, PT) and Inga Griškova-Bulanova (VU, LT), covering working memory deficits in a rodent model of autism, cortical dynamics, and EEG biomarkers.
Selected talk: Manuel Silva (GIMM, PT) on hippocampal circuit resilience in ageing.
- Behaviour session: Included insights from Jan Rodriguez Parkitna (IP-PAS, PL) on spatial transcriptomics and Luísa Pinto (UMinho, PT) on psilocybin’s effects on adult hippocampal cytogenesis.
Selected talk: Aniqa Saiyara (IP-PAS, PL) on maternal diet and postnatal behavioural changes.
- Eye as a Model session: Talks by Neil Lagali (LiU, SE) and Raquel Santiago (UCoimbra, PT) explored corneal regeneration and glaucoma models.
Selected talk: Daniel Pereira (NMS, PT) on the regenerative role of Muller Glia
- Imaging Session: Featured Tiago Gil Oliveira (UMinho, PT) on imaging signatures in Alzheimer’s disease.
Selected talk: Ana Pereira (FMUL, PT) on microglia morphology analysis in ex vivo epilepsy models
Over 40 participants from across Europe joined the symposium. This event fostered dialogue across disciplines, showcasing the diversity of approaches and model systems used to advance translational neuroscience.

The PANERIS Symposium 2025 successfully reinforced the project’s mission to support collaboration, training, and knowledge exchange within the field of neurodegenerative disorders.
We thank all participants, speakers, and organizers for contributing to a vibrant day of science and discussion.
Stay tuned for upcoming PANERIS events and training opportunities!
